How to Stop Heartburn Fast

How to Stop Heartburn

No one has time for heartburn! And, if you have experienced it before, you know heartburn is not something you want to feel for long. The next time you experience heartburn, try one of these helpful tips to get fast relief.

Drink Some Apple Cider Vinegar: To relieve heartburn discomfort, mix a teaspoon of unfiltered apple cider vinegar with a glass of water. While there isn’t enough scientific evidence to say for sure that it will work, many people find it helps.

Chew Some Gum: Next time you experience heartburn, try chewing a stick of sugar-free gum to help temporarily reduce acid levels in the esophagus and get rid of your symptoms quickly.

Take Antacids: Antacids are frequently used to help quickly relieve heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid. They typically come in a chewable tablet or liquid and start to work within 10 minutes of taking them. Antacids are a great way to stop occasional heartburn. Common antacids are Tums and Mylanta.

Drink Aloe Vera Juice: Aloe vera has been used for centuries to relieve the burning sensation caused by sunburns, but did you know it can also alleviate heartburn? Drinking a small amount of aloe vera juice may help reduce heartburn symptoms.

Eat a Banana: Bananas are a naturally alkaline food that can help reduce stomach acid and stop heartburn fast.

Take Some Baking Soda: If you don’t have access to an over-the-counter antacid, baking soda can substitute in a pinch. Simply mix a small amount of baking soda into a glass of water, and it will quickly eliminate your heartburn.

Try Ginger: Ginger has been used to help relieve many different GI symptoms, including heartburn. The next time you are struggling with heartburn, try eating a small piece of ginger or sucking on a ginger candy.

Take An H2 Blocker: Medications like famotidine work by blocking a histamine receptor in the stomach, stopping acid production. They typically work within 15 minutes to an hour to reduce heartburn.

Avoid Heartburn in the First Place

The best way to get rid of heartburn is to prevent it from happening in the first place. If you experience frequent heartburn, consider making these lifestyle changes to avoid heartburn symptoms altogether.

  • Avoid triggering foods such as spicy or fatty foods, citrus fruits, chocolate, coffee, carbonated beverages, and alcohol.
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals to prevent your stomach from becoming too full, which can cause heartburn.
  • Eat slowly to avoid swallowing air, which can increase heartburn.
  • Sit upright after eating to prevent food from traveling back up into the esophagus.
  • Sleep with the head of your bed elevated to reduce the risk of stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that doesn’t put pressure on your abdomen.
  • Losing weight can be helpful, especially if you carry weight around your abdomen.

If you’re struggling with heartburn that keeps coming back no matter what you have tried, it’s time to talk with a doctor. Chronic, untreated heartburn can cause problems in the future, including increasing your risk of esophageal cancer.
